Detail of the overwintering foliage rosette of the Scotch Thistle, Common Thistle or Bear. Thistle (Cirsium vulgare), a biennial or short-lived perennial, summer-flowering thistle that can grow to 1.5m tall. In addition to spreading by seed it has a vigorous root system.
