Holm Oak or Holly-leaved Oak (<i>Quercus ilex</i>) with mature acorns. This evergreen oak, 15-25m tall, is native to the Mediterranean region. It is among the hardier evergreen oaks. These acorns have an enlarged and folded over rim to the cup that is typical of the form from the Extremadura region of Spain. The Holm oak is also known as Encina but should not be confused with the Encina. Live Oak (<i>Quercus agrifolia</i>) from California. Order: Fagales, Family: Fagaceae
