The bark of the Matai (Prumnopitys taxifolia), an evergreen 15-25m tall tree that occurs over almost all of New Zealand. The tree has quite a long juvenile phase, with wiry, tangled branches and sparse foliage, before developing its elegant adult form. Matai can be confused with Miro (Prumnopitys ferruginea) but is easily distinguished in the juvenile phase and when mature it produces black fruit rather than red. prumnopitys-2756htm'>Prumnopitys.
