Summer Grass, Hairy Crabgrass or Purple Crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis) growing in an asphalt road. This tough summer annual grass is native to the warmer parts of Eurasia but now widely naturalised in the warm temperate regions. While very occasionally cultivated for fodder and its edible seeds, its ability to spread rapidly and self-sow all too free usually sees it considered to be a weed. The purple-bronze inflorescences and seedheads, which are held well above the foliage, are distinctive. Order: Poales, Family: Poaceae.
