Comfrey (Symphytum officinale), a strong-growing herbaceous perennial native to eastern-central Europe. It is widely grown as a medicinal herb and for its bold foliage. In addition to being used to treat wounds, comfrey is sometimes known as knit-bone, for its ability to help set broken bones. It does also have culinary uses but is not widely eaten. The foliage is also used in composts to speed decomposition — a compost activator. symphytum-2299htm'>Symphytum.
