Matai (Prumnopitys taxifolia) passing form its juvenile to intermediate growth phase. This evergreen 15-25m tall tree occurs over almost all of New Zealand. The tree has quite long juvenile to intermediate growth phases, with wiry, tangled branches and sparse foliage, before developing its elegant adult form. Matai can be confused with Miro (Prumnopitys ferruginea) but is easily distinguished in the juvenile phase and when mature it produces black fruit rather than red. prumnopitys-2756htm'>Prumnopitys.
