Canes of Moso (Phyllostachys edulis), a large bamboo with a strongly running root system. This species forms forests of canes that can be up to 21m (75ft) tall It is native to China but was introduced to Japan long ago and has become naturalised there. The young shoots are edible, hence the epithet edulis, and the mature canes are used for many purposes, including construction.
