The fruit of the Purple Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana), a 10m tall evergreen tree native to Malaysia and Indonesia but now widely cultivated in the tropics for its edible fruit. The soft interior of the fruit is eaten raw and the rind of the hard shell has recently been used to produce juice-like extracts rich in antioxidants.
