Leafless.Clematis (Clematis afoliata) with mature seedheads. This scrambling semi-climbing spring-flowering shrub is native to Marlborough and Canterbury in the east of New Zealand's South Island. Its green stems perform most of the functions of foliage, though it does occasionally carry vestigial leaves. The small, clustered, yellow-green flowers are often sweetly scented.
