A Totara (Podocarpus totara) sculpted by the strong, cold southerly wind at the top of Western Valley, Banks. Peninsula, New Zealand. The clearance of the forest on these hills in the early 20th century exposed these trees and now all the growth on the windward side has died. The totara is a 30m tree native to New Zealand. The source of an extremely durable and beautifully marked resinous timber it is distinguished by its stout trunk and peeling bark. Order: Araucariales, Family: Podocarpaceae
