An old Monterey. Cypress (Hesperocyparis macrocarpa [syn. Cupressus macrocarpa]) undergoing surgery to remove broken limbs. Popular as a farm shelter tree in New Zealand, where this shot was taken, this western North American native often develops very heavy branches that are inclined to break under their own weight in strong winds. While not really a timber tree, it makes excellent firewood. Order: Pinales, Family: Cupressaceae
