When seen in the wild, the mature forms of these two New Zealand native trees can be difficult to distinguish form each other. But seen together in their younger growth phases the difference is clear: Rimu (Dacrydium cupressinum), above, has a weeping branch structure with minute, cylindrical sectioned leaves that are closely spaced and overlapping, while the branches Kahikatea (Dacrycarpus dacrydioides), below are more horizontal and the flatter leaves are more widely spaced.
