Overwintering monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) in Timaru, New Zealand warm themselves in the sun on a blackwood tree (Acacia melanoxylon). While often seen in great numbers at the start of winter, by the end of the season - when this photo was taken - the population has dwindles. Though there are always enough to start another generation as the weather warms.
