A low coastal loess cliff near. Timaru, South Canterbury, New Zealand due to high storm tides. The fence post visible at the top of this photo was several metres form the cliff edge only a few years before. The blanket of iceplant provides some protection from heavy rain on top of the cliff but can do nothing to stop the sea eroding the soft base, eventually causing the loess to collapse under its own weight. soil-scenes-3712htm'>Soils and Soil.
