Exposed by the erosion of winter coastal storms, this layer of yellowish loess is common in South Canterbury, New Zealand As seen here, the darker layer of topsoil is quite thin, which can severely limit the depth to which roots development, as the loess is often dense and difficult for roots to penetrate, especially where it combines with the thick grey clay often found in the same areas.
