Black She-oak (<i>Allocasuarina littoralis [syn. Casuarina littoralis]), an evergreen, 8-15m tall tree native to eastern Australia, where it occurs mainly near the coast, extending from Cape. York in the far north all the way to Tasmania. The male flowers are reddish on opening and then turn a buff colour, and are borne in catkins that open from mid-autumn. The female flowerheads open a little later and are red.
