A Nodding Thistle or Musk Thistle (<i>Carduus nutans</i>) with fastigated flower heads, a deformity where several stems appear to fuse together to create a broad, flattened stem. This biennial thistle is native to Eurasia but is now a widespread weed in many temperate and subtropical areas of both hemispheres. It can grow to as much as 15m tall, is spiny all-over and the flowerheads are usually nodding, though they can be held horizontal or semi-erect. Order: Asterales, Family: Asteraceae
