Subclover (Trifolium subterraneum), a low, spreading annual originally native to Eurasia and North Africa but now widely naturalised. This species is most readily distinguished by its small flowerheads, which usually contain just three white fertile flowers and several much reduced sterile flowers. The seed germinate in autumn and the plant develops over winter, flowering in spring and drying off by early summer. It is an important pasture plant for fodder and soil improvement, and is consequently extensively cultivated. Many cultivars have been developed. Fabaceae. trifolium-3369htm'>Trifolium.
