Bear's Breeches (Acanthus mollis) in winter. This usually evergreen summer-flowering perennial is native to southwest Europe and North Africa, and often featured in ancient Greek and Roman designs. While a bold architectural plant that certainly has garden merit, it can also be a thuggish weed that is difficult to eradicate, as hinted at by the way it is spreading here. Order: Lamiales, Family: Acanthaceae
