A dense cluster of Woolly Apple Aphids (Eriosoma lanigerum), a pest of apples and pears that initially affects the top growth, but which is a far more significant problem when it attacks the roots. It can then interrupt the flow sap and nutrients to the plant and may spread viral diseases. In this image some of the woolly threads have been removed to more clearly show the aphids. A few scale insects are also present.
