Desert Broom (Carmichaelia petriei), a leafless, summer-blooming shrub that occurs naturally in cold, dry inland areas of New Zealand's South Island from Lake. Pukaki to central Otago and Southland. Its clusters of small, purple and cream flowers. The stems are usually yellow green and under ideal conditions, small bright green leaves may appear briefly. Order: Fabales, Family: Fabaceae
