The foliage of Ginger, Root Ginger or Stem Ginger (Zingiber officinale), a perennial native to tropical Asia. Its yellow-green and purple flowers are attractive, but the plant is mainly grown for its swollen rhizomes, which are spicily aromatic and pungent. The roots, which grow partly exposed, and the young stems are extensively used for flavouring food products and cooking. Order: Zingiberales, Family: Zingiberaceae
