Red Alder (<i>Alnus rubra</i>) in winter. This 20-35m tall deciduous tree is native to western North America, where it occurs from southern Alaska to northern California. The common name comes not from the male catkins, which are red when mature, but from the bright orange-red under-bark that is exposed when the pale grey surface is cut or scraped. NativeAmericans used the red alder bark in medicines and to make dyes. alnus-2121htm'>Alnus. <a href='betulaceae-plant-family-photoshtml'>Betulaceae</a>.
