The foliage of the Century Plant (<i>Agave americana</i>), a large monocarpic succulent native to eastern Mexico. The thick fleshy leaves are edged with fierce teeth that make a permanent imprint on the surrounding leaves as they unfurl. Although given the name Century Plant because it was though to flower once in a hundred years, the rosettes actually take around 8-15 years to mature to flowering size, then producing a flower spike that can grow to over 6m tall After which they die, to be replaced by offsets. Order: Asparagales, Family: Asparagaceae
