Autumn foliage of the Californian Huckleberry (Vaccinium ovatum), an evergreen shrub from 1-4m tall, found from British Columbia to California. Its flowers appear mainly in spring and are followed by small berries that are black when ripe. The fruit is edible but generally too sour to be anything but an emergency food. Although evergreen, the foliage often colours well in autumn and winter. vaccinium-2753htm'>Vaccinium. Order: Ericales, Family: Ericaceae
