Japanese Hornbeam (<i>Carpinus japonica</i>), a deciduous tree up to 15m tall. It is native to Japan, produces flower catkins to 6cm long in spring and from midsummer carries conspicuous hop-like clusters of seeds enclosed in a papery membrane, as seen here. The serrated leaves are up 5-10cm long. Order: Fagales, Family: Betulaceae
