Part of an irregular ring of Armillaria fungus growing on the remaining roots around what was the stump of tree that was eventually killed by the rhyzomorphs of these wood destroying toadstools, commonly known as honey fungus. There are several species in the Armillaria genus but their relationships are not well understood and they are often aggregated under the name. Armillaria mellea.
