The surface of a pineapple (Ananas comosus), a bromeliad, probably originally from Brazil, that is widely cultivated and very well known for its delicious edible fruit. The stem, up to 12m tall, dies once the fruit is mature. As a close examination of the surface shows, a pineapple is really many small fruits fused together, each segment being the remnant of a single flower. Order: Poales, Family: Bromeliaceae
