Shadbush (Amelanchier canadensis) in early spring with leaf and flower buds opening. This deciduous shrub or small tree is up to 8m tall It is native to eastern North America and in spring is covered in white flowers that are followed by small purple-black fruits. In cultivation this species is often confused with Amelanchier lamarckii, but is most readily distinguished by its tendency to be shrubby rather than tree-like ands by its ready production of suckers.
