The trunk of a young Parana Pine, Brazilian Pine or Candelabra Tree (Araucaria angustifolia) with its protective coat of overlapping, downward-facing, spine-tipped leaves. This evergreen conifer, up to 40m tall, is found in Brazil and neighbouring parts of Paraguay and Argentina, usually in mountain forests at elevations up to 1800m. Its branches are covered in fierce, sharp edged, spine-tipped leaves, as is the trunk when young. When mature the tree has branches held in a distinctive radiating pattern resembling a candelabra. Order: Pinales, Family: Araucariaceae
