The young spring foliage and flowers of Japan Pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum), a deciduous shrub or small tree up to 6m tall. The stems have sharp spines near the leaf axils. Male and female flowers occur on separate plants. The ground seeds are used a pepper substitute and the crushed bark is also spicy. The young leaves can be eaten. Order: Sapindales, Family: Rutaceae
